On Saturday 26th August 2023 starts the season for llampuga fishing in Mallorca. This year the fishing of this species will be allowed until the 31st of December. The ‘llampuguera’ or net fishing for this species is one of the most eagerly awaited campaigns by fishermen, as the commercial results it has brought in recent years in the Balearic Islands have been very positive.

According to the Directorate General of Fisheries, in the 2022 season approximately 120 tonnes were caught, more than the previous year, with a value of 900,000 euros in income for the fishing sector. This data translates into higher income obtained with a lower volume of catches compared to 2020.

The ‘llampuguera’, known as the art of this type of fishing, is a traditional Mallorcan activity with a long history. Many professionals in the sector will go out to fish for llampuga during the 2023 season.

In addition, the Producers’ Organisation OPMallorcaMar is the one that regulates the catches of its members, establishing a maximum daily catch of 150 kilos of llampuga for each boat.

It should be remembered that the use of llampuga ‘capcers’ is exclusively for professional fishermen using small gears. The regulation foresees economic sanctions for those professional boats of other modalities that fish at less than 250 metres from the distance of the professional llampuga fishermen.
