The President of the Government, Francina Armengol, today dissolves the Balearic Parliament by signing the decree that calls the elections to the Balearic Parliament and the councils for 28 May. As for the local council elections, they are being called by the central government.

There are two key dates:

  • 24 April, the deadline for parties to present their respective candidacies.
  • The second date on the calendar is 12 May, when the election campaign begins. It will last 15 days, until 26 May.

The call for elections for political parties prevents, from tomorrow when the decree is published in the Butlletí Oficial de les Illes Balears (BOIB), that they carry out acts of inauguration or dissemination of achievements by the Government and public institutions.

In these elections, 793,123 people were registered as residents of the Balearic Islands on 1 January of this year. To these must be added the 32,245 Balearic citizens living abroad who are eligible to vote.

In the 2007 elections, Francesc Antich won the Government against Jaume Matas by one seat difference. In the following elections, those of 2011, José Ramón Bauzá’s PP obtained 35 MPs when the absolute majority is 30. The left regained power in 2015 with 34 MPs and in 2019 maintained the Govern with 32 MPs, two more than the number needed to govern.
