According to a study by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), together with Getxo, Madrid and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Palma is the city with the most expensive shopping basket in Spain. Thus, this has increased by 30.8% in the last two years. The cheapest supermarkets in each city can help consumers save 1,056 euros a year on average

OCU spokesman, Enrique García, stressed that the report of the cheapest supermarkets in Spain shows the “continuity in the sharp rise” in prices and food spending in the last two years. So much so that the shopping basket has become 30.8% more expensive in the last two years. Garcia justifies the policy of rising prices of supermarkets in the “significant increase in production costs.

Thus, this increase in food spending for families has been accompanied by a loss of purchasing power and has meant a loss in nutritional quality in households that have stopped buying fresh products to the detriment of other more elaborate or precooked products, OCU concludes.

According to the study of the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) the cities with the cheapest shopping basket are Teruel and Cordoba, while by autonomous regions those with the best prices are La Rioja, Galicia and Murcia. The most expensive are the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands. Palma is also the city with the most expensive shopping basket in Spain. Overall, this has risen by 14.1% in the last year in Spain, with an average annual expenditure of 6,019 euros. However, OCU assures that it is possible to save 1,056 euros on average per year depending on the supermarket chosen.

This average increase of 14.1% in 2023 is slightly lower than inflation in 2022, which was 15.4%. The study presented by the OCU focuses on 1,108 establishments in 65 cities and online supermarkets.

Sugar, oil and vegetables, the most expensive foods

According to the OCU, nine out of ten products included in our baskets have increased their price with respect to the previous year. Especially the prices of sugar and products that include it, such as condensed milk or ice cream, have risen. The rise in some vegetables such as onions and carrots is also striking. Among the decreases are those of sunflower oil and bananas, which rose sharply last year due to extraordinary causes such as the war or the volcanic eruption.
