Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani de Palma is hosting the international congress CIMAM – International Committee of Museums and Collections of Modern Art – from 11 to 13 November. This is the only worldwide association of experts in modern and contemporary art museums. The Museum’s candidacy was the winner among the proposals from different cities around the world and this will be the 54th edition, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of CIMAM. In turn, in 2022 it also coincides with the Documenta contemporary art event and the Venice Biennale, which could make it easier for Palma to connect with other European cities.

The three-day programme includes 3 keynote speakers, 10 perspective presentations, 3 round tables, a networking session, workshops and organised visits to Palma’s art institutions.

Palma thus becomes the second Spanish city, after Barcelona, to host this annual event. The candidacy presented by Es Baluard Museu was articulated from a proposal based on the three lines of research that strengthen the Museum’s identity. These are “Collection. Archive and Visual Memory”, “City. Art and Communities” and “Imaginaries and Visualities”.

Mami Kataoka, President of CIMAM and Director of the Mori Art Museum (Tokyo, Japan) stated that “the pandemic has shown that it means a lot for us to come together physically in one place, learning from the history of the country and the region. The CIMAM Annual Conference has always been a place where each of us has been reminded that we are part of a larger community of planetary museums.

For her part, the president of the Consell de Mallorca and president of the Board of Trustees of Es Baluard Museu, Catalina Cladera, described as “magnificent news that Es Baluard Museu is the headquarters of CIMAM, a milestone that means that Palma, Mallorca and the Balearic Islands become a world cultural and museum capital and an international benchmark”.

General Assembly in the Lonja

CIMAM will also be holding its General Assembly on Sunday 13th November at La Lonja de Palma and online. This is the supreme governing body of CIMAM, made up of all the members present, and will serve to announce the newly elected members of the Board of Directors for the 2023-25 period.
