The mayor of Palma, José Hila, has dismissed the councilor of Social Justice, Feminism and LGTBI, Sonia Vivas, and announced that the ‘Palma Pride Week’ is suspended.

The events celebrating the Gay Pride Week were scheduled to begin this coming Saturday 18th and end on June 28th. However, after the announcement of the dismissal of Sonia Vives, has led to the suspension of all scheduled events of the ‘Pride Week’.

The organization of the event had raised numerous criticisms since its inception. Entities such as Ben Amics opposed it in 2020, accusing her of “appropriating the pride festival, having unilaterally decided its postponement due to the coronavirus”. And just yesterday demanded the resignation of Sonia Vivas and the withdrawal of public funds for the ‘Pride Week’.

In addition, last week’s controversial statements by the organizer of the event, Kristin Hansen, generated a major crisis between the partners in government in the City Council of Palma.

Finally, Sonia Vivas has handed over her seat as councilor after being dismissed from her post by the mayor of Palma. Thus, the Pacte de Cort maintains the majority in the City Council of Palma.
