Luis Rubiales has announced his resignation as president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and also as vice president of UEFA. The until now president of the RFEF leaves the post after the non-consensual kiss to Jennifer Hermoso in the celebration for the victory in the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. In a statement, Rubiales has assured that he has been pushed to make the decision by the “swift” suspension of FIFA and “the rest of the proceedings” opened against him.

Luis Rubiales has held the position of RFEF president since 2018; now, the institution will set the process in motion and in the meantime Pedro Rocha will continue as acting president. The secretary general of sport of the Spanish government, Victor Francos, has welcomed Rubiales’ resignation. In addition, Francos has announced changes to the sports law to strengthen public control over entities such as the Football Federation. On the other hand, Jennifer Hermoso’s club, Pachuca Femenil of Mexico, has paid tribute to the world champion in her first match after the World Cup.
