At the age of 92, the writer Antonio Gala died early Sunday morning at the Reina Sofía hospital in Córdoba, where he had been admitted since Saturday due to complications in his state of health

The world of culture woke up this Sunday to the news of the death of the poet, novelist, playwright and writer Antonio Gala, aged 92. Gala passed away after his health had deteriorated sharply in recent weeks. The writer was born in Brazatortas, Ciudad Real, in 1936 according to some, and in 1930 according to others. He retired 15 years ago to a convent in Córdoba where he set up a foundation for young creators.

From the time he wrote his first short story at the age of five, Gala did not stop writing in different genres and registers, until he became one of the most important figures in Spanish literature in the 20th and 21st centuries. He published his first novel in 1990, ‘El manuscrito carmesí’ (The Crimson Manuscript), which won the Planeta Prize. Books of poems such as ‘Enemigo Íntimo’, award-winning novels such as ‘La Pasión Turca’ or ‘El Manuscrito Carmesí’, and plays such as ‘Anillos para una dama’, are just some of his best-known titles.
