Space tourism takes off with Virgin Galactic’s first suborbital flight with tourists on board. The flight was successfully completed on Thursday: it lasted 20 minutes and reached weightlessness. This was assured by the company of billionaire Richard Branson, who also recently embarked on his adventure as a hotelier in Mallorca with the opening of the Hotel Son Bunyola.
Jon Goodwin, 80, and Keisha Schahaff and his daughter Anastatia Mayers, 46 and 18 respectively, were the first space tourists. The three experienced the sensation of weightlessness for a few minutes, gazing in awe out of the aircraft windows to take in the views of the earth from space. They were accompanied by commander C.J. Sturckow, pilot Kelly Latimer and the Virgin Galactic astronaut instructor who trained the passengers for their flight, Beth Moses.
414,000 euros
According to the company, this was their seventh space flight and their second commercial space flight. However, it is the first with space tourists. Tickets to fly on Unity can cost as much as 414,000 euros. Branson’s intention is to operate monthly trips for those interested.
