Mallorca’s heritage now has a new digital showcase thanks to the Mallorca Digitalizada y Realidad Aumentada (Digitised Mallorca and Augmented Reality) project. The initiative brings together 50 historical, cultural, natural and ethnological assets from the island on an interactive platform featuring immersive experiences and augmented reality content for residents and visitors.

The project, promoted by the Consell de Mallorca with an investment of €600,000 financed through European funds, includes the interactive platform www.mallorcadigitalizada.com and an experimental augmented reality application. Both tools were developed by the Universitat de les Illes Balears (UIB) and are managed by the Fundació Universitat-Empresa de les Illes Balears (FUEIB).

Discovering Mallorca’s heritage through new technologies

Digitised Mallorca and Augmented Reality features natural areas such as Cabrera and Sa Dragonera, landmarks including the Serra de Tramuntana and Formentor, monuments such as the castles of Bellver, Alaró and Capdepera, and iconic buildings including La Llotja de Palma and the Palau de l’Almudaina. It also includes archaeological sites, festivals, traditions and examples of intangible heritage such as the Cant de la Sibil·la, the Firó de Sóller and the almond blossom.

Each of these assets includes an extensive collection of multimedia materials, including videos, photographs, 360-degree images, three-dimensional reconstructions, interactive routes, immersive settings, animations, plans, illustrations and informative texts.

The aim is to offer an intuitive experience that allows users to discover the island’s heritage from anywhere and support its conservation and promotion through new technologies.

A platform open to future additions

The UIB has designed the platform as a living project, ready to incorporate new assets over time. The repository will therefore continue to grow, offering an increasingly comprehensive overview of Mallorca’s cultural, historical, natural and scenic heritage.

According to the project director and head of the UIB’s LADAT Animation and Audiovisual Technologies Unit, Juan Antonio Montes de Oca, the current 50 assets form a first representative selection. However, the tool has been designed to continue growing and become a benchmark for the conservation and promotion of Mallorca’s heritage.

The President of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, said: “Mallorca is much more than a tourist destination; it is a land with extraordinary heritage, cultural and natural wealth. With this platform, we are opening a digital window that allows anyone to discover and appreciate everything that defines us as an island. Thanks to new technologies, we can now present Mallorca in an immersive, innovative way that is open to the world, strengthening both our identity and our appeal.”
