Citizens from all over the world land in Mallorca and end up putting down roots on the island. Global people living together in Mallorca, where there is an ever greater mix of cultures and nationalities. As in every edition, Mallorca Global Mag hits the streets to talk to some of its most international residents and hear their stories.

Names: Mary, Erik, Deia and Clara Strandgren.
Country of origin: Switzerland and Sweden.
Time in Mallorca: 5 years.
Profession: Digital marketing and aviation.

The couple formed by Mary, of Swiss origin, and her husband Erik, born in Sweden, arrived on the island five years ago for work reasons, accompanied by their daughters Deia and Clara, who are now 16 and 12 years old, respectively. Erik’s job at Son Sant Joan airport brought them to the island, and the climate invited them to stay. “We love it,” Mary says without hesitation, noting that they can enjoy the outdoors all year round, something that contrasts with the harsh weather in their home countries. “In Mallorca you can always be outside, and we are always outside, in winter and in summer”. Although they don’t know if it will be forever, for the moment they enjoy everything the island has to offer.

Name: María Florencia Tordini.
Country of origin: Argentina.
Time in Mallorca: 7 years.
Profession: Public relations.

She came to spend a summer but… “the island caught me”, she admits, who loves “the mix of cultures and the multiple options that Mallorca offers: beach, mountains…”. According to this Argentinian, “if you have a good job, it’s a place where you can live very well, with a very interesting lifestyle”. One of her favourite plans is to enjoy a good coffee in one of Palma’s signature cafés.

Name: Alexandre Lambert.
Country of origin: France.
Time in Mallorca: 9 months.
Profession: Wine seller and fruit creations.

Alexandre sold his fruit shop in France and now combines two jobs: one selling wine in Santa Catalina and the other, as a freelancer, “making fruit creations – @maisonlambertpalma – something new in Palma. I wanted to leave and I was looking for a place with an airport well connected to Normandy. When I was 20, I did my Erasmus in Vigo and I always wanted to return to Spain”, he admits.

Name: Johannes Kiendl.
Country of origin: Germany.
Time in Mallorca: 1 year.
Profession: Hospitality and real estate services.

The link with Mallorca goes back to when his grandmother lived on the island. “It felt like my second home. I always wanted to live in Spain and learn Spanish,” he says, although he acknowledges that it is not easy “working in an English and German environment”. He likes the winter best, “when you can meet the real people of Mallorca, who are always friendly and hospitable”.

Name: Sandra Patricia Arboleda.
Country of origin: Colombia.
Time in Mallorca: 3 and a half years.
Profession: Caregiver.

Born in Puerto Tejada, Cauca, Sandra arrived on the island directly from Colombia, but had to leave for a month on the mainland because “the housing issue is very complicated”. However, “the climate, the diversity of cultures and the tranquillity, especially in terms of security – you can walk around at night without any problems”, convinced her to return to Mallorca.

Name: Philip Klimaszewski.
Country of origin: Canada.
Time in Mallorca: 1 and a half years.
Profession: Pilot.

Philip considers himself a citizen of the world, although he was born in Canada and just happens to have his mother visiting the island. Because of his job as a pilot he could live anywhere in Europe, but he decided to settle in Mallorca, specifically in a flat in Alaró, “because I have some friends here”. What he enjoys most is “the sea and the weather”.
