Do you want to feel like a craftsman, a beekeeper, learn to work the palm tree or to embroider for a day? The third edition of Amb les mans, coordinated by Tania Baides, offers us a series of workshops and experiences with a double objective: to learn how to create with our hands and to support those who keep the culture and traditions of the island alive.
The places where they take place include farms, factories, wineries, fields and craftsmen’s studios. In each of these sites the host will be the artisan himself. The program for this month is highly recommended, so make a note of the dates!
On Saturday 14th November you will be able to embroider senalles with heart of palm on a farm in Felanitx with the “master craftsman” Guiem. You will be able to choose the motif and the material to embroider: natural palm heart, dyed palm heart or different coloured fibres. You will take your own personalised signage home with you.
On Saturday 21st November you will work with clay to build a siurell, a traditional Mallorcan figure made of clay. The craftswoman, Coloma Cañellas, will open her house-workshop, where she will give us an introduction to siurells and ceramics in Marratxí. We will bleach them and while they dry, we will visit the Museu del Fang in Marratxí. “I am excited to be able to show the traditions of my family and my people: how we work the siurells with our hands and the passion we put into each one”, says Coloma Cañellas.
On Wednesday 2 December you will make your first tiles in Campos with the help of Huguet. You will experience the satisfaction of creating a ceramic piece with the motifs and pigments you choose.
On Saturday 5th December you will be a beekeeper for a day in Son Alzines (Escorca) accompanied by Martí Mascaró, who maintains that his essence as a beekeeper “is the search for almost intact ecosystems in Mallorca and the sustainable collection of ecological honeys”, such as that of Mel Caramel.
On Saturday 5 December there is another workshop at the Fundació Sa Llavor in Binissalem to create your own fan, just as the company Antic Mallorca does. You will learn the whole process of the heart of palm and all the basic steps of this craft in one morning.
