On Thursday 29th June the Symphony Orchestra of the Balearic Islands (OSIB) will inaugurate the ‘Estius Sinfònics’ concert series with two performances by Davit Khrikuli and Martín García, who will play pieces by Brahms and Rakhmàninov respectively. The Castell de Bellver is the venue chosen for the event, which will take place at 9:30 pm and will be conducted by the resident conductor Pablo Mielgo.
Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2
The evening will begin with the solo pianist Davit Khrikuli (2001, Tbilisi – Georgia), who since 2020 has been studying at the Banco Santander Foundation Piano Chair of the Queen Sofia School of Music and has been awarded the Diploma for the most exemplary student of his chair by Queen Sofia. According to the Department of European Funds, University and Culture, “Brahms’ piece is considered to be one of the most technically difficult; a less tragic composition than its predecessor but with a great symphonic character. It consists of four movements and, like Liszt, breaks the traditional classical concerto scheme by adding a fast second movement after the first movement”.
Khrikuli has won prizes in national and international competitions. In addition, he has been awarded prominent prizes such as the Aarhus International (2013, Denmark), Tbilisi Chopin National Piano Competition (2013, Georgia), Nutcracker International TV Competition (2013, Russia), Astana Piano Passion (2014, Kazakhstan) and the Arthur Rubinstein International Competition for young pianists (2016, Xina).
Rakhmàninov Piano Concerto No. 2
This “piece of great beauty, composed between 1900 and 1901, in which one can recognise the recovery from the depression and blockage suffered by its Russian composer years before”, will be performed by the solo pianist Martín García (Gijón, 1996), who has accumulated very positive reviews of his concerts in Europe and the United States by renowned musicians.
García has won first prize in several national and international competitions, including his victory at the Cleveland International Piano Competition in 2021.
