The General Plan of Ports of the Balearic Islands that has been approved by the Consell de Govern prohibits new ports and infrastructures and further growth
The Consell de Govern has approved this Monday, in a definitive manner, the General Plan of Ports of the Balearic Islands. This planning instrument sets out the criteria that will determine the evolution of the islands’ port system over the next 10 years. It does not permit either the construction of new ports or the enlargement of existing ones. It also proposes specific, low-impact solutions such as the reorganisation of moorings, the creation of temporary anchoring areas with low-impact buoys, the provision of a network of dry marinas mainly in inland areas or areas close to existing ports and the improvement in the management or promotion of sailing clubs to improve mooring places and ensure that more people from the islands can enjoy sailing.
In this way, the General Ports Plan of the Balearic Islands aims to maintain public management of the ports of the Balearic Islands, as a guarantee of citizens’ access to nautical spaces; the optimisation of existing port infrastructures, without new extensions or new ports; the promotion of new services and new formulas for enjoying the nautical world; the need for each port to be integrated into the urban area, so that the ports are not isolated spaces, and the planning of the necessary actions to have ports prepared to face the effects of climate change. This planning has been agreed with the nautical sector and the administrations involved.

In total, Ports de les Illes Balears manages 47 ports, 13 low-impact anchoring areas and 13 ramp facilities. In total, approximately 14,500 mooring points. The Plan aims to optimise the current facilities, without providing for new ports or the growth of existing ones.
The General Ports Plan of the Balearic Islands contemplates actions in the ports under regional jurisdiction, a total of 59 ports between those under direct and indirect management, with an investment of more than 60 million euros, of which nearly 43 million euros correspond to public investment.
