The AEMET has downgraded its heavy rain warning for Mallorca from red to orange in the early hours of Monday 19 October, after the heaviest rainfall forecast failed to hit the island with the expected intensity. The orange warning remains in place throughout the morning, with possible rainfall of up to 50 litres per square metre in one hour, before an expected downgrade to yellow from midday.

Rain in Mallorca on 19 October 2026

Despite this improvement, the Govern de les Illes Balears is maintaining its red Civil Protection alert in Mallorca and the Pityusic Islands due to the risk of heavy rain and flooding. The director of the 112 Emergency Coordination Centre, Eduardo Parga, has warned that conditions remain highly changeable and urged the public not to let their guard down.

The storm developed more favourably than expected overnight. According to information provided by Emergencies, between 22:00 on Sunday and 6:30 on Monday, two fallen trees and one preventive intervention due to the risk of a building collapsing were reported in Mallorca.

What rainfall is expected in Mallorca on Monday?

AEMET had issued a red warning for the early hours, between 00:00 and 6:00, due to the possibility of exceptionally heavy rainfall. However, at around 4:00, the agency announced that the warning had been downgraded to orange.

The latest forecast indicates:

  • Until 12:00: orange warning for rain and thunderstorms, with possible rainfall of between 40 and 50 litres per square metre in one hour.
  • From midday: the warning is expected to be downgraded to yellow, although showers and thunderstorms may still occur.
  • During the afternoon: further rainfall is possible, although it is currently expected to be less intense than originally forecast for the early hours.

The weather system is associated with cut-off low Adam, an isolated area of low pressure in the upper atmosphere that continues to cause unsettled weather across the Balearic Islands. Although forecasts suggest that the risk is decreasing, Emergencies stresses that there is still uncertainty about how the storm will develop.

Emergencies maintains red Civil Protection alert

The downgrade of AEMET’s weather warning does not mean that the emergency measures introduced by the Govern have been lifted.

The Directorate-General for Emergencies and the Interior is maintaining the red alert level under its Civil Protection plans in Mallorca, Eivissa and Formentera, along with recommendations to avoid unnecessary journeys and outdoor activities.

The Govern has reminded the public that rainfall accumulated over previous days has left the ground saturated, meaning there is still a risk of flooding even if the rain becomes less intense.

Schools remain closed and Palma maintains preventive measures

The suspension of classes remains in force on Monday 19 October at all educational establishments in Mallorca and the Pityusic Islands, following the decision taken by the Govern on Sunday.

Day centres and occupational centres for people with care needs and disabilities have also been ordered to close.

In Palma, the Ajuntament de Palma (Palma City Council) activated PLATERPALMA, the city’s emergency plan, on Sunday, introducing measures including the closure of parks and public spaces and the cancellation of activities. Other Mallorcan municipalities, including Llucmajor, Andratx, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Bunyola and Porreres, also activated their emergency plans.

Safety advice during heavy rain and flooding

Emergencies continues to urge the public to follow safety precautions while the severe weather persists:

  • Avoid unnecessary journeys and outdoor activities.
  • Do not cross torrents or flooded areas, either on foot or by vehicle.
  • Stay away from low-lying areas and places where water may accumulate.
  • Do not enter basements or garages at risk of flooding.
  • Move to upper floors if water enters your home.
  • Check official information channels and call 112 in an emergency.
