The weather in Mallorca today, Wednesday 16 September, will be marked by a new spell of heavy rain and thunderstorms. The Direcció General d’Emergències i Interior has urged people to exercise extreme caution ahead of rainfall expected to begin affecting the island from midday, with up to 30 litres per square metre in one hour possible in the worst-affected areas.
According to forecasts from the Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) reported by Emergencies, the front will reach Mallorca at around 13:00 and could remain active until approximately 21:00. A new spell of rain is expected overnight, with Eivissa and Formentera particularly affected.
Weather warnings in Mallorca this Wednesday
The weather warnings in Mallorca vary depending on the area of the island:
- Southern Mallorca: orange warning for rain and yellow warning for thunderstorms, with up to 30 l/m² in one hour possible. The warning affects areas including Palma, Andratx and Llucmajor.
- Serra de Tramuntana, central Mallorca and Llevant: yellow warnings for rain and thunderstorms.
- Northern Mallorca: expected, in principle, to be the area least affected by the episode.

In addition to the rain in Mallorca, thunderstorms could bring occasional wind gusts of between 70 and 90 km/h, although they are not expected to reach the intensity of the previous episode.
Weather in Mallorca this Thursday
Conditions will deteriorate again from midnight. A first wave of heavy rain and thunderstorms could arrive overnight, with up to 40 l/m² in one hour. Forecast models suggest that a significant proportion of this rainfall could fall over the sea.
The weather in Mallorca on Thursday 17 September will remain unsettled. The island will initially be under an orange warning for rain and thunderstorms, although this is expected to be downgraded to yellow from 08:00. Rainfall could reach 30 l/m² in one hour.
The episode will be more intense in Eivissa and Formentera, where the orange warning will remain in force throughout the day and rainfall could reach 50 l/m² in one hour. Menorca will also initially be under an orange warning before this is downgraded to yellow from 08:00.
Coastal weather warning in Mallorca and Menorca
The thunderstorms in Mallorca will also affect coastal areas. Winds associated with the episode have prompted a yellow warning for coastal conditions in northern and north-eastern Mallorca and Menorca.
These areas could see winds of between 40 and 50 km/h and waves reaching two metres.
Emergencies keeps the Meteobal Plan activated
The Direcció General d’Emergències i Interior has kept the orange alert (IG-1) of the Meteobal Plan active for rain and thunderstorms across the Balearic Islands, as well as the yellow alert (IG-0) for coastal conditions in Mallorca and Menorca.
The Meteobal Plan’s Technical Advisory Committee met at 11:00 on Wednesday to assess the forecasts and will continue to monitor weather conditions. A further meeting is scheduled for 19:00 today to assess the situation ahead of the overnight period and Thursday.
Emergencies warns that heavy rainfall could cause localised flooding, water accumulation and incidents on roads, around torrents and in areas affected by surface run-off.
Recommendations during the orange alert in Mallorca
With an orange alert in Mallorca in force, Emergencies recommends avoiding unnecessary journeys and checking official information before travelling. It also advises the following safety measures:
- Close doors and windows and remove outdoor objects that could be blown away.
- Take measures to prevent water from entering homes.
- Do not enter basements, garages or other low-lying or flood-prone areas.
- Do not cross flooded areas, either on foot or by vehicle.
- Stay away from torrents, low-lying areas and places where water may accumulate.
- Do not park or stop in flood-prone areas, on bridges, at fords or near river mouths.
- Call 112 in any emergency.
