Mallorca is under alert for rain and thunderstorms ahead of several periods of unstable weather forecast between Thursday 1 and Saturday 3 October. Emergències has activated an orange alert (IG-1) for rain and a yellow alert (IG-0) for thunderstorms and is urging the public to take precautions due to the possibility of heavy rainfall and accumulations of water.
The Technical Advisory Committee of the Meteobal Plan met on Thursday to assess the situation in view of the forecast of adverse weather conditions. The Direcció General d’Emergències i Interior recommends following updates to AEMET warnings and particularly avoiding torrents, low-lying areas and other places at risk of flooding. You can consult the map of flood-prone areas in Mallorca at this link.
Rain warning in Mallorca on Thursday 1 October
The first episode is forecast for the afternoon and evening of Thursday 1 October, when rainfall could reach 30 litres per square metre in one hour in Mallorca.
AEMET is maintaining a yellow warning across much of the island and has raised it to orange in southern Mallorca. Rainfall exceeding 30 litres per square metre in one hour is not expected in this area, but its characteristics mean that this amount falling over a short period could have a greater impact.
The thunderstorms could also bring intense lightning activity and hail, although they are not expected to be accompanied by strong wind gusts.
Friday 2: warnings in the Serra de Tramuntana and southern Mallorca
A new episode will begin during the early hours of Friday 2 October, with rain and thunderstorms arriving from the Spanish mainland. The rainfall will initially affect Eivissa and Formentera and could subsequently reach northern and southern Mallorca with less intensity.
AEMET has activated a yellow warning for rain and thunderstorms in the Serra de Tramuntana and southern Mallorca between 10:00 and 20:00 on Friday.
Developments will depend on the movement of the rainfall, as there is a high probability that a significant proportion of the rain and thunderstorms will occur over the sea.
Saturday 3: orange warning in central Mallorca
A third episode is forecast for Saturday 3 October and could bring rain across Mallorca. The heaviest rainfall is initially expected in central Mallorca during the middle of the day, where rainfall could exceed 30 litres per square metre in one hour.
The forecast points to an orange warning for rain and thunderstorms in central Mallorca and a yellow warning for the same conditions across the rest of the island.
AEMET also forecasts that the unsettled weather could continue into next week.
Emergències urges caution due to heavy rain
Given the risk of heavy rainfall and localised accumulations of water, Emergències is urging extreme caution and recommends:
- Avoid unnecessary journeys and take extra care if travel is essential.
- Do not cross flooded areas, either on foot or by vehicle.
- Stay away from torrents, low-lying areas and places where water may accumulate.
- Do not park or stop in flood-prone areas, on bridges, at fords or near river mouths.
- Take measures to prevent water from entering homes.
- Close doors and windows and remove outdoor objects that could be swept away.
- Switch off the main electricity supply and turn off the water supply if there is a risk of water entering the property.
- Do not enter basements, garages or other low-lying or flood-prone areas.
The Direcció General d’Emergències i Interior is continuing to monitor the situation closely, constantly tracking weather developments and remaining in contact with AEMET.
