The The Serra de Tramuntana, Before and After (La Serra de Tramuntana, antes y después) exhibition can now be visited at the Centre Cultural La Misericòrdia in Palma. The exhibition will remain open until 12 July and brings together nine rephotographs of some of its most representative locations. It will then begin an itinerant tour of several municipalities in the Serra.

Promoted by the Consell de Mallorca, the exhibition forms part of the events marking the 15th anniversary of the Serra de Tramuntana’s declaration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It also brings the outreach project The Balearic Islands, Before and After, which until now could only be viewed digitally, into a physical exhibition format for the first time.
Nine rephotographs to discover the evolution of the landscape
The exhibition presents nine rephotographs of some of the Serra’s most emblematic locations. These include Alaró Castle, Coma-sema, Cape Formentor, the Charterhouse of Valldemossa, the Son Moragues snow house, Torre des Verger, Deià, Sóller and Puig de Son Nasi.
Each image places a 19th-century illustration alongside a current photograph taken from the same viewpoint. In this way, visitors can see how the landscape and heritage have changed over time.
A project inspired by the work of Archduke Ludwig Salvator
The The Serra de Tramuntana, Before and After exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the Consell de Mallorca and Lluc Julià Fàbregues, creator of the project The Balearic Islands, Before and After. Since 2002, he has worked to locate the places illustrated by Archduke Ludwig Salvator of Austria in order to photograph them from the same viewpoint.
The project takes as its reference Die Balearen in Wort und Bild Geschildert (The Balearic Islands Described in Words and Pictures). This nine-volume work documented the landscape, heritage and customs of the Balearic Islands during the 19th century.
