The number of Spanish tourists in the Balearic Islands fell during the first quarter of 2026. The archipelago received 8.8% fewer trips by residents in Spain compared with the same period in 2025. In addition, overnight stays fell by 5.1% and the total expenditure linked to these visits dropped by a further 8.8%, according to data published this Monday by Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE).

Spanish tourists in the Balearic Islands

Between January and March, the Balearic Islands received 447,713 trips by residents in Spain, representing 1.3% of the national total. These visits generated 1.6 million overnight stays, equivalent to 1.4% of those recorded across the country, and expenditure of €134.2 million. Average spending reached €300 per traveller, with daily expenditure of €81.

Residents in the Balearic Islands made more than 915,000 trips

In contrast to the decline in domestic tourism received, residents in the Balearic Islands maintained a high level of mobility during the first quarter of the year. Between January and March, they made 915,190 trips, which totalled 4.5 million overnight stays and expenditure of nearly €438 million.

Each resident spent an average of €528 per trip, while daily expenditure reached €106, a figure higher than that recorded among travellers who chose the Balearic Islands as their destination.

Trips by residents in Spain also declined

Across the country, residents in Spain made 33.2 million trips during the first quarter of 2026, 4.4% fewer than in the same period of the previous year.

The fall was concentrated in trips within Spain, which decreased by 5.7%. By contrast, trips abroad increased by 3.7%, confirming the growing interest among Spanish travellers in international destinations.
