Cinema a la Fresca 2026 in Palma pays tribute to silent film

The first of two major silent film screenings will take place on Monday 24 August. Parc de les Estacions will host El gabinete del Doctor Caligari (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari), directed by Robert Wiene and released in 1920.

The film is considered one of the defining works of German Expressionism. Its story revolves around a hypnotist who uses a sleepwalker to commit murders. The screening will also feature live music by DJ Raphael Marionneau.

The closing night will also look back at the origins of cinema. On Wednesday 2 September, El maquinista de la General (The General), directed by Buster Keaton and Clyde Bruckman, will be screened. Keaton also stars in this comedy set during the American Civil War.

The film celebrates the centenary of its release in 2026. Its story was inspired by a real event that took place in 1862 and centres on a spectacular railway chase.

Flow and Las chicas de la estación among the upcoming films

Before the change of venue, Parc de les Estacions will host two more films. On Tuesday 25 August, audiences can see Flow: un mundo que salvar (Flow), an animated film by Gints Zilbalodis notable for having no dialogue.

A day later, on Wednesday 26 August, Las chicas de la estación (The Girls at the Station), directed by Juana Macías, will be screened. The film has a strong connection to Mallorca. It was produced with the participation of La Perifèrica and IB3 and was partly filmed in Palma.

During the final week, Cinema a la Fresca will move to Plaça Francesc García Orell. Es gegant des Vedrà (The Giant of Es Vedrà), by Eivissa-born director Héctor Escandell, will be shown there on Monday 31 August. On Tuesday 1 September, it will be the turn of Un like de Bob Trevino (Bob Trevino Likes It).

The programme also includes short films before some screenings. Coin Coin, La innocència (Innocence) and Charlie are still to be shown.
