The Sóller tunnel will remain closed to traffic for two nights this May due to urgent maintenance work on the water pipeline system from sa Costera. The closure is scheduled from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on two occasions: the night of Wednesday 14 to Thursday 15 and the night of Monday 19 to Tuesday 20.

The intervention is necessary to replace several inspection chambers in the water pipeline that runs through the tunnel, an essential infrastructure for supplying water to the Bay of Palma. The pipeline, which originates in the Sóller area, is in a significantly deteriorated state, prompting the advancement of works that were already planned by the Consell de Mallorca.

Last week, emergency repairs were carried out to fix one of these chambers, which was severely damaged. The deterioration not only posed a risk to the water supply system, but also represented a hazard to the safety of vehicles travelling through the tunnel.

In total, 17 inspection chambers inside the Sóller tunnel are expected to be replaced. The work will be carried out at night to minimise disruption to drivers. However, during the closure hours, an exclusive lane will be set up to ensure the passage of emergency vehicles —ambulances, fire services and police— as well as allowing the circulation of public transport buses (TIB).

The Consell asks for the public’s understanding and reminds citizens that this work is essential to ensure safety and proper water supply.
