International Museum Day 2025 will be celebrated on Sunday 18 May, and as in previous years, numerous cultural venues across Mallorca are taking part with a wide range of activities open to all. This year, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) has chosen the theme “The future of museums in rapidly changing communities”, inviting reflection on the transformative role of museums in today’s society.

Throughout the weekend – and in some cases, in the days before and after 18 May – more than a dozen museums and cultural centres across the island will be offering free admission, guided tours, concerts, workshops, performances and activities for all audiences, with the aim of bringing cultural heritage closer to the public and promoting its preservation and enjoyment. Since its inception in 1977, International Museum Day has grown in global importance as an opportunity to highlight the educational, social and cultural role of museums.
Rondalla viva: rondalles mallorquines take centre stage
For this edition of International Museum Day 2025, the Consell de Mallorca is paying tribute to one of the island’s most treasured oral traditions: the rondalles mallorquines, recently declared an Intangible Cultural Asset of Mallorca. This official recognition highlights their value as transmitters of popular wisdom, collective identity and historical memory. A special programme has been prepared around this storytelling heritage with an activity entitled “Rondalles i museus. Rondalla Viva”, taking place at the following venues and times.
