The island institution has eliminated a total of 17,000 tourist places from its stock market, which means a decrease of 9% in the area of land for urban development. This means that Mallorca cannot increase any more tourist places

The Consell de Mallorca has agreed this Thursday to eliminate 17,000 tourist places from the stock of land it manages through the modification of the Territorial Plan of Mallorca (PTM). This means a decrease of 9% in the area of land for urban development. And the declassification of 653 hectares that are classified as rustic land.

Whit this modification the island will not be able to grow any more tourist sites. A measure that the government in the Consell has approved in the last plenary session of the legislature. It has done so by introducing a verbal amendment to the modification of the Territorial Plan. This vote was harshly criticised by the opposition, who described the measure as “electioneering” and approved “in haste”.

In this way, all pending tourist places will be eliminated until the island’s tourist carrying capacity is re-evaluated downwards. According to the Councillor for Tourism, Andreu Serra, the stock of vacancies was suspended because the Tourism Law already covered it. He added that the Plan for Intervention in Tourist Areas (PIAT) was also in line with the process of reduction and elimination of vacancies.

In conclusion, the PTM – in accordance with what was defined by the PIAT – will not allow new residential growth in the tourist areas except for those destined for public subsidised housing.

653 hectares are reclassified as rustic land

This land is located in Sa Ràpita, in Son Durí and in industrial sectors at the entrance to Campos. Also in the municipality of Llucmajor in Son Noguera. In Manacor, numerous peripheral sectors and land in Porto Cristo, Sant Llorenç, Felanitx, Palma and Sóller have been declassified.
