The exhibition ‘Whatwethink as Insignificant Provides the Purest Air Webreathe’ by Markus Linnenbrink, which opened today in Palma, marks the first joint exhibition between Casal Solleric and Es Baluard Museu d’Art Contemporani. The show, which will be open to the public until 7 September at both venues, brings together several site-specific pictorial installations that explore the dialogue between painting, architecture, and spatial perception.

The title of the exhibition, inspired by the song The Secret Life of Plants by Stevie Wonder, reflects the artist’s view of emptiness as not a lack, but a fundamental presence.

Markus Linnenbrink, an international reference

Markus Linnenbrink, a German artist born in Dortmund in 1961, has an extensive international career that has led him to exhibit his work in some of the world’s most important cities, such as New York, Philadelphia, Berlin, Madrid, Istanbul, and Beijing, among others. Throughout his career, he has established himself as one of the leading figures in contemporary art, known for his ability to fuse painting with architectural space in a unique way. His approach focuses on the creation of immersive experiences that transform the viewer’s perception and break down the traditional boundaries between artwork and environment.

At Es Baluard, the artist has developed a large-scale installation that covers the walls from floor to ceiling at one end of the central corridor, as well as the lift at the opposite end. This intervention invites visitors to experience painting in an expansive and sensory way. It transforms the spatial perception, merging the artwork with the architecture and challenging traditional notions of what a painting can be.

At Casal Solleric, Linnenbrink has created an ascending installation in the building’s iconic inner courtyard. This proposal invites visitors to rediscover the space from a new perspective, raising their gaze towards the open sky before returning it to ground level, generating new ways of perceiving and moving through the environment. The piece reflects his ongoing exploration of space as experience, and of painting as a medium that transcends the physical boundaries of its surroundings.
