The 53 municipalities that make up the island of Mallorca have joined the pact of municipalities promoted by the European Union to tackle climate energy: the Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan. This agreement aims to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 40% by 2030. It also reflects a commitment to increase resilience to the impacts of climate change and cooperation with local and regional authorities to improve access to secure, sustainable and affordable energy.

The Councillor for Economic Promotion and Local Development, Jaume Alzamora, has remarked that Mallorca leads the European regions with the greatest adhesion to the PAESC: “There is no other region that has been able to bring all the municipalities together. In Mallorca we have achieved this, and the Consell, as territorial coordinator, will continue to support the local councils”.

Alzamora added that the Consell de Mallorca will continue to offer technical and economic support, “to achieve the 2030 objectives of the Covenant of Mayors, as well as to promote the training of municipal technicians in matters related to the PAESC”. In this regard, the councillor reported that “all” the municipalities of Mallorca have received grants from the Consell to carry out actions proposed in their municipal sustainable energy plans.

In total, the Consell has invested 11,700,000 euros through the councils, which have been used to install charging points for electric vehicles, plans to improve energy efficiency in buildings and facilities owned by municipalities. “Never before has there been such a clear and firm commitment as now,” he emphasised.

Currently, as Alzamora described, work is underway with the Government to implement a computer application to facilitate the monitoring of the PAESC in all the municipalities of the islands. For the time being, it is in the testing phase and, once it has been set up, it will be used to analyse the evolution and implementation of the CFSP as well as the assumption of the objectives established by the European Commission.
