The Balearic Islands has surpassed 30,000 solar self-consumption installations, with a combined capacity of more than 300 megawatts (MW). The deployment of solar panels has accelerated particularly over the past three years, a period in which 70% of all existing installations and nearly 80% of total installed capacity have been added.

According to estimates by the Regional Ministry of Business, the Self-Employed and Energy, installations connected during the current parliamentary term are allowing households and businesses to save more than €30 million a year on energy.
The Balearic Government highlights that the growth of self-consumption allows households and SMEs to generate part of the electricity they use and reduce their bills. For businesses, lower energy expenditure also helps to reduce operating costs and free up resources for other investments.
Solar self-consumption surges in the Balearic Islands over the past three years
The pace of photovoltaic installations has increased significantly. Seven out of ten existing self-consumption installations in the Balearic Islands have been added over the past three years.
The increase is even greater in terms of capacity. Nearly 80% of the more than 300 MW of total installed capacity comes from installations connected during the same period.
The Regional Ministry attributes part of this expansion to grant schemes and advice provided through the Oficines per a la Transició Energètica (Energy Transition Offices). It also points to measures introduced to streamline the administrative management of subsidies.
More than €30 million in annual savings
The Balearic Government considers that lower energy bills allow the investment in solar panels to be recouped more quickly. For businesses, they can also help improve competitiveness by reducing costs associated with electricity consumption.
Measures introduced in recent years include the Plan d’Impuls Energètic Acceleram (Acceleram Energy Boost Plan), launched in October 2023. Its aim is to strengthen the teams responsible for management and speed up the processing and payment of grants.
The Balearic Government places the growth of individual self-consumption, together with public and shared projects, within its strategy to increase renewable energy generation and reduce the Balearic Islands’ dependence on external energy sources.
