Another day of strike by Air Nostrum pilots, called by SEPLA. The company has been forced to cancel flights from Alicante, Almería, Bologna, Bordeaux, Frankfurt, Granada, Ibiza, Madrid, Mallorca, Menorca, Nice, Pamplona, Seville and Valencia. Of these 37 cancellations, 10 were to or from Son Sant Joan Airport, with connections between the islands and the Mallorca-Valencia route.

In an official statement, Air Nostrum has informed that “Customers affected by these cancellations can opt for reimbursement of tickets or relocation on alternative flights/dates, depending on availability”. The airline has reflected the flexibility of fares for passengers who have not been affected by these cancellations but still want to change the dates of their flight. With this measure, Iberia’s regional subsidiary wants to try to alleviate the negative effects that this pilots’ strike is having on its customers. Other stoppages have been called and will be repeated on 29 and 30 December and on 2 and 3 January.

What to do if my flight is cancelled?

If you have been affected by a flight cancellation, you are not obliged to accept a flight rebooking, although this is the solution often provided by many airlines. The European Regulation 261/2004 on passenger rights guarantees, under certain conditions, a compensation of between 250 and 600 euros to be paid by the airline company after your complaint.

Airlines are obliged to give full information about passengers’ rights and offer them a complaint form.

What are my rights if my flight has been cancelled?

  • You can request a full refund of your ticket or claim an immediate flight rebooking.
  • You will probably be entitled to compensation if the airline has given less than 14 days notice of cancellation.
  • Compensation ranges from ¤250 to ¤600 per person each way, depending on the number of kilometres of the route between origin and destination.
  • You are entitled to basic assistance such as food and beverage vouchers or even overnight stays if necessary when you are informed of the cancellation at the airport and more than 2 hours have passed since the scheduled departure of the flight.

What should I do at the airport after a cancellation?

  • The airline must provide basic assistance at the airport.
  • Ask the airline to confirm in writing the reason for the cancellation for a future complaint.
  • It is advisable to collect evidence during the time you are waiting between cancellation and alternative transport: expense tickets, screenshots, invoices, alternative tickets, discount vouchers and photographs of the information screens.

When am I entitled to compensation for a cancelled flight?

You are entitled to compensation as long as the notice of cancellation was given less than 14 days before departure of the flight. The European Passenger Rights Regulation 261/2004 guarantees reimbursement of the ticket price or re-routing and compensation of between 250 and 600 euros.
