The Fira de la Sardina (Sardine Fair), organised by the Confraria de Pescadors de Palma (Guild of Fishermen of Palma) with the support of the Ajuntament de Palma, closed its first edition with a resounding success. In just four days, from 15 to 18 May, more than 3,000 kilos of Mallorcan sardines were consumed, a figure that greatly exceeded initial expectations.

The public’s response was so enthusiastic that by Friday, the second day of the fair, the total quantity planned for the entire week had already been sold out. In response, three additional boats went out fishing that very day, despite it not being a usual fishing day, to ensure a fresh supply of sardines until the event’s conclusion.

Domingo Bonnín, chief skipper of the Confraria de Pescadors de Palma, celebrated the results: “We knew that Mallorcan sardines had potential, but the response has exceeded all our expectations. This fair has shown that local products are successful, and that when the public has access to them, they appreciate and consume them.”

As a demonstration of social commitment, the Confraria donated nearly 90 kilos of unsold sardines to the Associació Tardor, an organisation that works with people in vulnerable situations.

Thousands of visitors at the first fira de la sardina

The Moll de Pescadors was filled over the weekend with thousands of visitors and more than 40 marquees dedicated to gastronomy, maritime culture, crafts, music, and children’s activities. The sardine was the main attraction and was established as a symbol of local produce and Mallorca’s fishing tradition.

The fair also benefited from the collaboration of numerous institutional, social, and cultural organisations and companies, enriching the programme and ensuring a diverse and engaging experience. All indications are that this event is here to stay on Palma’s festive calendar.
