Calvià will activate a special mobility and safety plan this Wednesday, 12th August, for the solar eclipse. Traffic restrictions will begin from 3:00 pm and will particularly affect Santa Ponça, Costa de la Calma, El Toro and Portals Vells. Santa Ponça beach has been designated as the municipality’s Official Observation Zone for the eclipse.
Calvià is preparing for one of the busiest days of the summer. With the solar eclipse on 12th August 2026 approaching, the Town Council will implement a special operation to regulate traffic, prevent overcrowding and guarantee access for emergency services.
The operation will begin to be deployed 24 hours before the eclipse, with the progressive involvement of Local Police, Civil Protection and other municipal services. Traffic restrictions and road closures will be activated from 3:00 pm on Wednesday and may be extended or brought forward depending on traffic conditions and the number of people gathering in the area.
One of the main viewing locations will be Santa Ponça beach, designated by the Government of the Balearic Islands as Calvià’s Official Observation Zone (ZOO) and one of the 26 designated sites across the archipelago.
Traffic restrictions for the eclipse in Calvià
The mobility measures will mainly affect access to Santa Ponça, Costa de la Calma, El Toro and Portals Vells, where the largest crowds are expected.
From 3:00 pm, road closures or restrictions may be introduced at the following points:
- Cala Figuera road – Roundabout 8, towards Son Ferrer-El Toro.
- Plaça Jardí, at the junction of Jaume I Street, Santa Ponça Avenue and Bartomeu Rosselló Planas Street.
- Costa de la Calma roundabout, at Bella Vista-Avinguda de la Mar.
- Cala Figuera road, at the access to Portals Vells.
- El Toro access roundabout, at Avinguda Neptuno.
- El Toro access roundabout, at Avinguda Puig de sa Sirvi.
- Avinguda Jaume I, from the Plaça Santa Ponça roundabout to Lisboa Street, including access to and exit from the car park via Puig de Massanella Street.
The Town Council warns that these measures are subject to change. Road closures may be modified, extended or activated earlier than planned if the number of vehicles and people makes further restrictions necessary.
Santa Ponça, an Official Observation Zone for the eclipse
Santa Ponça beach will be the Official Observation Zone designated in Calvià by the Balearic Government for watching the eclipse.
The area will have controlled capacity. Once maximum capacity has been reached, access will be closed, meaning that travelling to Santa Ponça does not guarantee entry to the official observation zone.
Safety services along the coast will also be reinforced. The lifeguard service at Santa Ponça beach will remain operational until at least 10:00 pm.
Calvià Civil Protection volunteers and staff will be deployed throughout the day. In addition, two Civil Protection vessels will carry out surveillance and support duties at sea.
Restricted access to Puig de sa Morisca and several viewpoints
The Town Council has decided to restrict access as a preventive measure to certain elevated locations and viewpoints where excessive numbers of people could gather.
Access will not be permitted to Puig de sa Morisca or to some of the municipality’s main viewpoints, including those at El Toro and the Illes Malgrats.
The measure is intended to prevent overcrowding in areas with limited capacity where evacuation or intervention by emergency services could be particularly difficult.
The Town Council therefore recommends not travelling specifically to viewpoints or coastal areas unless necessary.
What time will the solar eclipse take place in Calvià?
According to information provided by the Town Council, the eclipse will begin at around 7:38 pm.
The total phase will take place approximately between 8:30 pm and 8:34 pm, depending on the observation point. In Mallorca, total darkness will last for approximately one and a half minutes.
The phenomenon will end at around 9:00 pm.
Although the entire eclipse will last for around an hour and a half, its most spectacular phase will therefore be very brief. The authorities recommend choosing a viewing location in advance and avoiding last-minute journeys.
Calvià recommends watching the eclipse without travelling
One of the Town Council’s main recommendations is to watch the eclipse from wherever each person happens to be whenever possible.
Residents may watch it from their homes or a nearby open space, while visitors staying in hotels and tourist accommodation can choose locations close to where they are staying.
The aim is to reduce journeys towards Santa Ponça, the coastline and the main viewpoints, preventing the road network from becoming congested in the hours leading up to the phenomenon.
Those who do need to travel are advised to prioritise public transport and avoid using private vehicles.
Residents, people staying in tourist accommodation and anyone who can provide proof of a justified journey will be able to reach their destinations, although they may encounter checkpoints and traffic controls.
Horizonte Eclipse 2026: check where you can watch it from
The Government of the Balearic Islands and AstroMallorca have launched the Horizonte Eclipse 2026 app to help people plan how and where to observe the phenomenon.
The tool allows users to check whether the maximum phase of the eclipse will be visible from the location where they plan to be and also provides educational content and safety recommendations.
It is available free of charge in Spanish, Catalan, English and German and can be used on mobile phones, tablets and computers.
How to watch the eclipse safely
Calvià Town Council reminds the public that the Sun should never be viewed directly without approved eye protection, as doing so can cause serious and irreversible eye damage.
The eclipse must be viewed using approved glasses complying with ISO 12312-2:2015.
Conventional sunglasses are not a suitable alternative, nor are homemade methods such as X-ray film, smoked glass, CDs or other filters that have not been specifically certified for solar observation.
The eclipse will also take place during a period of high wildfire risk. The Town Council reminds the public that lighting fires, using heat sources or leaving waste in natural areas is prohibited.

The Town Council will maintain an active monitoring operation throughout the day and may introduce additional measures depending on visitor numbers and traffic conditions.
