Cristina Macaya, cultural activist and ambassador for Mallorca, was awarded by the UN for improving the living conditions of women in prison with their children

Cristina Macaya has died in Palma at the age of 77 due to cancer. The disease was diagnosed more than two years ago. 

For 11 years, she was president of the Spanish Red Cross, and collaborated closely with Proyecto Hombre.

Her presidency at the head of the Red Cross promoted the creation of the “Sorteo del Oro”, an initiative that guaranteed the financing of its activities. In 2006, the United Nations awarded her the Women Together award for her work to improve the living conditions of women in prison with their children.

The businesswoman was born in Madrid, but was closely linked to Mallorca. In her house in Establiments she hosted politicians and important people from high society. In her finca d’Es Canyar she received personalities such as Bill Clinton and his family, the Duke and Duchess of Kent, the Prince and Duchess of Monaco, Michael Douglas, Gwyneth Paltrow, Van Morrison, Valentino, among many others. She was a trustee of the Yannick and Ben Jackober Foundation.
