A large Chinese door, located at the entrance of the street Nuredduna, which will be visible from 21 January, at the intersection between Aragon and Avenidas street, will welcome all citizens who come to the Pere Garau neighbourhood to celebrate the Chinese New Year, which will take place on Sunday 29 January. This was announced in the winter edition of Mallorca Global by Mag Fang-Ji, president of the organising entity (ACHINIB), before making it public yesterday at a press conference.

This removable gate will be on display until 5 February and symbolises the entrance to the neighbourhood and the Chinese New Year. According to Fang-Ji, “it represents multiculturalism and when you cross it, you can find yourself in any part of the world. Our idea is to promote cultural plurality because we see it as a richness”, he added.

From 10:00 am and throughout the day there will be activities to commemorate the beginning of the Chinese New Year, which this year is dedicated to the “Water Rabbit”. The festival has been declared by the Palma city council as a festival of municipal interest, and an EMT bus has been branded with the image of the festival. Shops in the area have also pledged to publicise the celebration, which has the support of PIMEM-Comerç.

Among the activities planned for the day are “drawing with melted sugar, activities with brushes to write names, traditional Chinese games to welcome the new year and above all Chinese food”, said Xiao, head of shops at ACHINIB. In addition, a parade with the participation of different countries is expected. “We are trying to unify the festival and involve the different cultures in the city,” added Xiao.
