Last October, the Balearic Islands recorded the best tenth month of the year in its history in terms of tourism, both in terms of arrivals and visitor spending and profitability. Thus, the islands accumulated the highest tourist expenditure in their history up to October: 16,873 million euros were spent by both national and international tourists who visited the archipelago in the first nine months of the year, as shown by the Tourism Expenditure Survey (Egatur) published by the National Statistics Institute (INE) and Ibestat.

Moreover, according to this survey and the Ibestat data, which add the variable of the national tourist, the average expenditure per visitor up to October was 1,058 euros, 4.75% above the data for 2019 (1,010 euros). And the average daily expenditure per tourist -both domestic and international- also stands at its highest level, 161 euros, 5.9% above that recorded in 2019 also in October.

16,872 million in spending

According to Egatur, the Balearic Islands accumulated in the first 10 months of this year an expenditure of 14,884 million euros by international tourists during their holidays in the archipelago, to which must be added the 1,988 million disbursed by domestic tourists. This total figure represents 4.91% more than in 2019, despite the fact that the number of arrivals is still slightly below that of that year (-0.03%). In the month of October alone, total expenditure was 1,613 million euros.

In terms of arrivals, for the seventh consecutive month the islands have recovered 100% of the tourism lost during the pandemic caused by Covid-19, achieving an increase in profitability thanks to higher spending by visitors. Moreover, the Balearic Islands closed October with the highest number of tourists ever in a tenth month of the year, with a total of 1.58 million tourists, both national and international, as shown by the Border Tourist Movement Survey (FRONTUR).

According to these data, the islands have been able to exceed by 13.6% the figures of October 2019, before the pandemic, while in the annual accumulated, the Balearic Islands closed the ninth month of the year with 15.94 million tourists in total, which means having recovered 99.9% of those who arrived in the same period of 2019.

Of the total of 1.58 million tourists, the number of nationals arriving on the islands during the fifth month of the year was 235,241 (+38%), while that of foreign travellers was 1.35 million, representing an increase of 10% over those who arrived in the same month of 2019.
