Permanent contracts in the Balearic Islands accounted for 62.5% of all contracts in August, putting the archipelago at the top of the ranking in Spain and almost double the national average of 38.5%. The labour market also ended the month with 25,706 people unemployed, 1% fewer than a year earlier.
In this regard, the regional minister for Treball, Funció Pública i Diàleg Social (Employment, Civil Service and Social Dialogue), Catalina Cabrer, highlighted the evolution of the Balearic labour market. “We are leaders in permanent contracts and are almost double the average for Spain as a whole”, she said during the presentation of the latest labour market report.
Unemployment falls by 1% in the Balearic Islands
The number of unemployed people stood at 25,706, 262 fewer than in August last year. However, the trend varied from island to island.
Menorca recorded the largest fall in unemployment, down 6.1%. It was followed by Mallorca (-0.8%) and Eivissa (-0.4%). Formentera was the only island where unemployment increased, with 10 more people out of work, a rise of 14.5%.
There was also a notable reduction in long-term unemployment, which fell by almost 20%. The Conselleria de Treball, Funció Pública i Diàleg Social linked this trend, among other factors, to SOIB programmes such as the Plan de Seguimiento Intensivo (SI) del Empleo (Intensive Employment Monitoring Plan).
By group, unemployment fell particularly among EU foreign nationals (-5.7%), followed by people aged over 25 (-1.8%) and women (-1.3%).
By contrast, unemployment increased by 6.5% among those under 25. The rise was even greater among non-EU foreign nationals, with a year-on-year increase of 33.9%.
Social Security registrations rise 4% to more than 693,000
Social Security registrations also continued to show positive growth. The Balearic Islands recorded 693,812 registered workers, 26,872 more than a year earlier. This represented a year-on-year increase of 4%.
Meanwhile, the number of self-employed workers registered with Social Security reached 110,124, representing 15.9% of registered employment in the islands.
The number of self-employed workers increased by 2,779 compared with August 2025 (+2.6%). Compared with the previous month, there were 196 more registrations, an increase of 0.2%.
