The Balearic Islands are once again the autonomous community with the highest share of permanent employment contracts in Spain. 74% of the contracts signed in June were permanent, well above the national average of 41.5%. This is reflected in the labour market report presented by the Regional Minister for Labour, Public Function and Social Dialogue, Catalina Cabrer.

Specifically, 54,006 new contracts were registered in the Balearic Islands in June, 8,922 more than a year earlier. This represents an increase of 19.8% compared with the same period in 2025.

Permanent contracts increased by 20.9%, ahead of temporary contracts, which rose by 16.8%. Hiring increased across all the islands, most notably in Formentera (+35.1%), followed by Ibiza (+24.8%), Mallorca (+18.8%) and Menorca (+15.6%).

Unemployment falls by 4.1% year on year

The number of unemployed people in the Balearic Islands stood at 23,707 in June, 1,015 fewer than a year earlier. In relative terms, this marks a 4.1% decrease, bringing unemployment down to historic lows.

By island, unemployment fell most sharply in Menorca (-8.3%), followed by Mallorca (-4.0%) and Ibiza (-2.3%). In contrast, it rose in Formentera (+4.4%).

By group, the sharpest falls were recorded among women (-4.8%), people aged over 25 (-4.4%) and EU foreign nationals (-8.7%). By contrast, unemployment rose among non-EU foreign nationals (+13.2%).

Extraordinary regularisation pushes up monthly unemployment, according to Cabrer

Compared with May, unemployment rose by 0.4%. The regional government links this increase to the extraordinary regularisation process introduced by the Spanish Government.

In June, 224 foreign nationals were registered under the RE code, corresponding to the extraordinary regularisation process. These people are now registered with the SOIB employment service.

Catalina Cabrer explained that “the extraordinary regularisation process has caused monthly unemployment to rise for the first time since 2008”. The regional minister added that the SOIB will continue to monitor the evolution of these figures because “we are concerned that the service could come under pressure”.

Social Security membership exceeds 678,000

The number of people registered with Social Security in the Balearic Islands reached 678,195 in June. This is 20,214 more people than in the same month last year, representing an increase of 3.1%.

On a month-on-month basis, Social Security membership increased by 3.7% in the islands, above the national figure for Spain, which stood at 0.6%.

The self-employed scheme recorded 109,543 members in June, accounting for 16.2% of total registered employment in the Balearic Islands. This represents 2,361 more self-employed workers than a year earlier (+2.2%) and 1,210 more than in May (+1.1%).
