The demand for second-hand books in the Balearic Islands has surged this summer, with an increase of 207% in July compared to June, according to data from Milanuncios and Appinio. ESO textbooks lead the growth with 266% more searches, followed by Bachillerato books (+192%) and Primary books (+122%).

This surge is directly linked to the economic pressure that families face in September. 89% of Balearic households are concerned about the rising cost of school supplies, and 66% say they will need to adjust their budget. Almost half (44%) will spend more than last year, and 34% expect to exceed 200 euros, mainly on books, stationery, backpacks, and uniforms.

In this context, second-hand options are consolidating as an economic relief:
-
64% of Balearic residents had previously used this option.
-
Savings range from 100 to over 300 euros.
-

Recouping the investment
The demand for second-hand books in the Balearic Islands is also reflected in sales: 69% of families state they have sold previous school supplies, and 25% are considering doing so. Motivations include giving products a second life (71%), recouping investment (62%), and freeing up space at home (40%). Among young people aged 18 to 24, the priority is clear: 77% seek to recover their expenses.
On the national ranking, the Balearic Islands are the fifth region searching most for second-hand books during the summer, only behind the Canary Islands, Andalusia, Madrid, and Galicia. However, in volume of listings published, it ranks fourteenth.
With inflation pressuring the start of the school year, second-hand items have become a key tool for Balearic families to save money on back-to-school expenses.
