Quality wine from the Balearic Islands continues to gain ground in the market. In 2024, its sales increased by 4% compared to the previous year, reaching more than 5.2 million litres sold, up from 5 million in 2023, with a total economic value exceeding 43 million euros. However, total production decreased by 22%, dropping from 6.8 million litres in 2023 to 5.3 million in 2024.

These figures have been published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, through the Directorate-General for Agri-Food Quality and Local Products. The report includes data on the production and sales of quality-labelled wines from the Balearic Islands, including the Denominations of Origin (DO) Binissalem and DO Pla i Llevant, as well as various geographical indications under Vi de la Terra: Mallorca, Menorca Island, Ibiza, Formentera, Serra de Tramuntana, and Balearic Islands.
Regarding these results, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, Joan Simonet, considers this growth a very positive outcome “in a context of widespread stagnation in the European wine market. This 4% increase represents a very good result, especially considering that we are growing above other Spanish DOs such as Rioja, Ribera del Duero, and Rueda.”

Regarding domestic consumption, the Director-General for Agri-Food Quality and Local Products, Joan Llabrés, emphasises that “one of the Ministry’s objectives, as outlined in the Local Product Promotion Plan, is to increase the sales of our wines within our islands. Work is already underway to stimulate domestic demand, targeting individual consumers as well as visitors and the hospitality sector.”
Fourteen Mallorcan wineries present at ProWein 2025
A total of 14 Mallorcan wineries will take part from 16 to 18 March in ProWein 2025, the world’s largest wine fair held in Düsseldorf (Germany). Ten of them will exhibit at the Consell de Mallorca stand, where more than 60 wine references from the island will be showcased. This space will host eight wineries from the IGP Vi de la Terra Mallorca—Mesquida Mora, Castell Miquel, Bodega Son Prim, Bodega 7103, Tianna Negre, Oliver Moragues, Macià Batle, and Son Juliana—, along with two wineries from the DO Binissalem, Biniagual and José Luis Ferrer (Franja Roja).
Additionally, four other Mallorcan wineries will have their own representation at the fair: Can Axartell and Binigrau, which have opted to exhibit independently, and wineries Miquel Gelabert and Miquel Oliver, which will participate within the DO Pla i Llevant stand.

“ProWein is a unique opportunity for our producers to expand their business relationships, as they engage with professional visitors from all over the world. Furthermore, it allows them to assess the pulse of the wine industry in other destinations,” stated Pilar Amate, Minister for Economic Promotion and Local Development of the Consell de Mallorca. As a demonstration of the Consell’s support for the wine sector, Amate explained that “this year we have managed to expand the exhibition space to accommodate more wineries. Specifically, two more are attending compared to the previous edition, because, as the producers themselves have conveyed to us, the presence of wineries at the fair is crucial for promotion abroad.”
