The foreign tourist who is arriving in the Balearic Islands during 2022 spends 20% more at the destination than before the pandemic. This is shown by the Tourist Expenditure Survey (Egatur) made public by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) and the data collected by Ibestat. From January to May of this year, the average expenditure per visitor amounts to 1,124 euros. In 2019 it was 939 euros, a record year both in arrivals and in spending and profitability. The duration of the trip also increases this 2022, going from the 5.9 days on average that were registered in the first five months of 2019 to 6.9 days this year.

From January to May, spending amounted to 3,641 million euros in total, 11.7% more than in 2019, when the figure was 3,263 million euros. Despite the fact that the number of arrivals is still below that of that year. In the month of May, total spending was 1,816 million, 12.7% more than the 1,611 million with which it closed the same month of 2019.

Some figures that highlight the fact that the tourist who now visits the Balearic Islands spends more at the destination, increases their average stay and favors greater profitability of the entire tourism sector.

According to Ibestat, tourists with the main destination Mallorca spent 3,148.81 million euros from January to May, while those who arrived in Menorca spent 256.15 million, and those with an Eivissa-Formentera destination spent 660.58 million. The variation with respect to the same accumulated months of last year in Mallorca was 418.85%, in Menorca 556.63% and in Eivissa-Formentera 583.13%.

20.1% of tourist spending was dedicated to paying the costs of a tourist package, 39.28% was dedicated to expenses related to accommodation or maintenance and the rest (40.62%) to transportation expenses , activities and other expenses.
