workplace accidents in the Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands recorded in 2025 a 4.01% reduction in workplace accidents, according to data from the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy compiled by the Balearic Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (IBASSAL). This decline places the islands above the national average and makes them the seventh autonomous community with the sharpest fall in workplace accident rates.

The figure marks a significant shift in workplace risk trends, as the Balearic Islands no longer lead the country in accidents in the construction sector, one of the areas with the highest exposure.

Decline in workplace accidents in the Balearic Islands by sector

The fall in workplace accidents in the Balearic Islands extends to all economic sectors in 2025. The incidence rate – which measures the number of accidents resulting in sick leave per 100,000 workers – shows the following figures:

  • Agriculture: 4,216.03 (-8.3%)
  • Industry: 6,259.57 (-4.2%)
  • Construction: 6,509.89 (-3.3%)
  • Services: 2,588.05 (-2%)
  • Hospitality: 5,203.15 (-6.2%)

Agriculture and hospitality recorded the sharpest declines. Construction still posted high figures, but lost its position as the sector with the highest accident rate.

Trend in workplace accidents in the Balearic Islands by island

The figures by island show a general downward trend in workplace accident rates in the Balearic Islands:

  • Mallorca: 3,730.55 (-3.83%)
  • Menorca: 4,469.94 (-5.70%)
  • Ibiza: 3,835.08 (-4.97%)
  • Formentera: 2,405.08 (+14.26%)

The increase in Formentera reflects the volatility of the data, due to its smaller active workforce.

Fatal workplace accidents in the Balearic Islands in 2025

In 2025, 15 fatal workplace accidents were recorded in the Balearic Islands, which represents a 0.25% increase compared with 2024. Of these, six were in itinere, and one concerned an accident in Germany in which a worker died during a circus performance.

Stronger prevention measures in companies

The Ministry of Labour, Public Function and Social Dialogue attributes these results to the strengthening of prevention policies. During 2025, IBASSAL visited 3,306 companies, a 27.15% increase on the previous year.

The body focuses its action on companies with higher accident rates, from three accidents upwards, with the aim of reviewing prevention systems and safety conditions. Companies generally show a collaborative attitude.

Monitoring has also increased in specific areas, such as the works at Palma Airport, while targeted campaigns have also been launched. Among them is the prevention of the effects of heatwaves, which will continue in 2026.
