Runaway price increases, especially in basic products, are at the heart of the concerns of Balearic citizens, according to the latest issue of Quaderns Gadeso, which analyzes how Balearic society perceives the socioeconomic, political and personal/domestic situation.

“To the traditional socioeconomic problems of our community (housing, salaries, instability and job insecurity, etc.), this year inflation is added” -the barometer reads-, which worries 38% of those surveyed, while 50% confess to feeling “very worried”.

Housing and wages are the next areas of concern for the islanders. On a scale of 3, housing, “whether access to it or payment (rents and mortgages)”, worries 2.3. Wages, “which are not rising at the same rate as prices,” are the third concern (2.2).

Asked about the socioeconomic prospects for 2023, Balearic citizens are “quite pessimistic” about the evolution of the indicators mentioned. Only public services, mainly health and transport, “are expected to experience a slight improvement, as a result of the agreement between the Government and the health unions and the free public transport”.

The political scene

2023 is an election year and in political matters the Balearics are concerned about the degree of tension (2.2) and the consequent deterioration of the institutions that it entails (2.2). Also the crisis in the Constitutional Court (2.1) and the rise of extremism (2).
