Unemployment fell by 35.9% in the Balearic Islands in December compared with the same month the previous year. This is one of the largest decreases among the autonomous communities in relative terms, with 20,123 fewer unemployed.

The State Public Employment Service (SEPE) registered 35,851 unemployed people in the Balearic Islands in December 2022, which means a drop of 35.9% compared to the same month last year, the largest decrease among the autonomous communities, with 20,123 fewer unemployed people.

The number of people registered as unemployed in the Balearic Islands is 636 less than in November, with a month-on-month fall of 1.7%, according to the December unemployment data published on Tuesday by the Ministry of Labour and Social Economy.

Demographic data

Of the total number of unemployed in the Balearic Islands, 20,704 are women and 15,147 are men.

In terms of classification by employment sector, of the total of 35,851 unemployed in the Balearic Islands, most are in the services sector, with 27,078 unemployed. In the agricultural sector there are 503 unemployed and 1,559 in industry, 4,193 in construction and 2,518 people who have not worked before.

Hiring

Hiring in the Balearic Islands falls in November and shows a slight decrease during the month of December compared to the same month of the previous year: 18,854, 7,091 less than in November (27.3% less); and 2,840 less than in December 2021, with a year-on-year decrease of 13%.

New permanent contracts amounted to 10,236 in December, 6,158 less than in November (-37.5%) and 6,358 more than in the last month of 2021, an increase of 163.9%.

8,618 temporary contracts were signed in December, 933 less than in November (-9.7%) and 9,198 less than in December 2021, representing a drop of 51.6%.

Social Security affiliation

The Islands ended 2022 with 17,412 more Social Security affiliates, with a total of 458,202 registered, 3.9% more than in December of the previous year. Compared with November, enrolment fell by 4%, with 19,373 fewer people registered in the Balearic Islands. 360,932 people are in the general scheme, 95,170 are self-employed, 2,385 belong to the agricultural scheme, 9,302 in the special household scheme and 1,912 in the maritime scheme, the total of those registered with Social Security in the Balearic Islands.
