Palma Film Office has received 70 filming requests during the first six months of the year, which is a slight increase compared to the same period last year (when there were 58). These requests have resulted in 25 reports or documentaries, 16 photography shoots, 8 advertising shoots, 4 film shoots and 17 that are included in other types of audiovisual initiatives.
According to Rodrigo Romero, Councilor for Economic Promotion and Employment, “these data represent an increase of around 20% compared to 2020; they are positive data if we take into account the pandemic”. The councilor adds that this summer is being very positive: “In July and what we have been in August we have already managed 20 files; among which there have been series, commercial spots and photography shoots”.
Romero highlights that the work carried out by the Palma Film Office generates wealth in Palma, since these shootings involve hiring of staff, overnight stays, catering, car rental… He points out that, for example, for the filming of the Netflix series “Hustle”, Palma Film Office has made arrangements to facilitate filming at the Son Moix sports center, at Palma airport, at the Juan Estelrich Rafal basketball court, in ACIRE areas, in the Central District and in various streets of the Polígono from Levante (Puerto Rico, Brotad, Bogotá and Barranquilla).
The cinema, the most affected
Regarding the type of audiovisual projects, it can be seen that photography projects almost double those of the previous year, which also happens with reports, documentaries and video clips; while the number of advertising projects has dropped slightly. On the other hand, film projects are those that have been most affected, although expectations are favorable and there are projects to shoot feature films in the second half of 2021.
During the first half of 2021, spots were shot in Palma for companies such as TUI, American Express, Mango, Renault, Balearia, etc. It is worth highlighting the interest generated by the city as a setting for large productions for international television, including the US market. In fact, three film projects are currently being developed for the North American market that will soon be able to be seen on screens around the world.
“Most of the productions are of national origin and as for foreign productions, those of German origin predominate and we can highlight the American ones for the repercussion they have,” says the Councilor for Economic Promotion.
