Remodelling work on Palma’s plaça del Mercat and carrer Unió will begin in February 2027, once the Festes de Sant Sebastià have ended. The project, with a budget of €4.4 million, also includes improvements to plaça Weyler and a section of carrer Riera, with the aim of improving accessibility and expanding pedestrian areas in the city centre.

The Ajuntament de Palma has agreed with representatives of local businesses to postpone the start of the work until after the Christmas shopping season and the Festes de Sant Sebastià. The decision aims to minimise disruption to businesses during one of the busiest retail periods of the year. The City Council has also informed residents of the revised schedule.

The project has a budget of €4,426,701, of which €3.1 million comes from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS). In total, the work will cover an area of 11,560 square metres, encompassing plaça del Mercat, carrer Unió, plaça Weyler and the section of carrer Riera between plaça del Mercat and La Rambla.

How plaça del Mercat and carrer Unió will change

In plaça del Mercat, the internal traffic lane surrounding the square will be removed and a shared-level surface will be created to expand the pedestrian area. The project also includes resurfacing and improvements to public lighting using LED technology.

In carrer Unió, pavements will be widened and the space allocated to vehicle traffic will be reduced. A shared-level surface will also be introduced along the section opposite plaça del Mercat, while bus and taxi stops, as well as loading and unloading areas, will be reorganised.

The project also includes the renewal of street furniture and various underground infrastructure systems. Rainwater and wastewater networks will be separated, drainage pipes in poor condition will be replaced, and improvements will be made to the drinking water supply network.

During the remodelling, the spaces and services needed for the area to function will be maintained, including parking spaces reserved for people with reduced mobility, loading and unloading areas, accessible EMT bus stops and taxi ranks.
