The Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival (EMIFF) opens its twelfth edition on October 18 with the film “Un amor”, by Isabel Coixet. The filmmaker receives the Evolution Vision 2023 award at the opening in recognition of her career. Lone Scherfig’s “The Movie Teller” will be screened at the closing gala on October 24 following its recent premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Susanne Bier, Daniel Brühl and Eric Messerschmidt will also receive special awards

EMIFF presents a selection of 147 titles from 25 countries. Among these, 41 are part of the ‘Made in Baleares’ section that celebrates its tenth anniversary as a hallmark of the festival and highlights the local talent and creativity of the film industry of the islands. This new edition arrives with more than 140 films, talks, events and international collaborations with great filmmakers and industry professionals.

The festival recognizes Isabel Coixet with the Evolution Vision Award at Evolution Mallorca 2023 as “an iconic filmmaker who inspires audiences, breaks boundaries and creates diverse stories for a global audience,” noted festival director Sandra Lipski. Afterwards, the screening of her film “Un amor” (2023) will take place. The festival also values that “his film career shows a constant interest in denouncing social injustices and giving voice to minorities”.

The film, written and directed by Coixet from the novel by Sara Mesa, stars Laia Costa, along with Hovik Keuchkerian, Hugo Silva, Luis Bermejo, Ingrid García-Jonsson and Francesco Carril. This was explained by the festival in a press release. The film is competing for the Golden Shell at the 71st edition of the San Sebastian Film Festival. And it is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 10.

Susanne Bier, Daniel Brühl and Eric Messerschmidt receive the special award

Filmmaker Susanne Bier and actor Daniel Brühl will also receive the Evolution Icon Award. Cinematographer Eric Messerschmidt, ASC, will receive the second Evolution Cinematography Icon Award.

Isabel Coixet, awarded with Evolution Vision 2023

For the Festival, Isabel Coixet (Sant Adrià de Besòs, Barcelona, 1960) is one of the most prolific directors of contemporary Spain and a renowned author of feature films, documentaries, short films and commercials. Her career has been recognized with distinctions such as the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts in 2009, the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres awarded by the French Ministry of Culture in 2015 and the National Cinematography Award in 2020.

The director of the Mallorcan festival, Sandra Lipski, considers it an honor to inaugurate the event with Coixet’s latest film and to present her with the Evolution Vision for “her honest and direct way of working”. Lipski highlights “her international career and her ability to bring together many different cultures on set to create incredible films.”

The full EMIFF 2023 program will be announced at a press conference in early October.
