Cycling enthusiasts have their mecca in Mallorca. Good weather, spectacular scenery, variety of routes and suitable for everyone.

In Mallorca Caprice we have chosen this route to enjoy a day with the family on two wheels.

The green route from Artà to Manacor, or vice versa, is the route that uses the old railway line that connected the eastern end of the island. The old stations of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Son Carrió and Son Servera can be found between the towns of Manacor and Artà. These towns have great rural charm with rich gastronomy and attractive cultural heritage.

Origins of the route

The history of the railway in Mallorca began in 1875 with the inauguration of the line between Palma and Inca. This first line later continued to Manacor. At that time, it was thought to be extended to Artà. And finally the steam train arrives in Artà in 1921. And in 1977 an accident precipitated the closure of the line after 56 years of activity.

In 1999, the Government of the Balearic Islands began a plan to restore the island’s railway. And in 2003 it reopened the Inca-Manacor line and in 2009 work began on reopening the Manacor-Artà section with a train-tram project. However, the work was halted due to its environmental and economic unfeasibility.

It was therefore planned to redirect the infrastructure to at least take advantage of the work done and convert it into a green route under the direction of Serveis Ferroviaris de Mallorca. This is how the 28.6 km long Vía Verde Manacor-Artà was created on the old railway line.

Bike trip to the Vía Verde

It is an easy, safe and adapted route for cyclists and walkers to follow. Traditional agricultural fields and Mediterranean forest can be seen along the Via Verde.

In addition, nine Natural Protected Areas will be covered during the route, such as the Llevant Natural Park, which together with the sheep, horse and goose farms will delight the youngest visitors.

The equipment along the route is very complete, as it has recreational areas and information panels along the entire route. There are also other facilities such as bike rental and restaurants.

Autumn is the perfect time to do this route by bike, come on and tell us about your experience!
