The Balearic Islands was the autonomous community where foreign tourists spent the most money in the month of August in all of Spain. In total, they disbursed 1,580 million, which represents 26.8% of the total that these visitors spent in the country as a whole. In this way, more than 1 out of every 4 euros that a foreign tourist spent in Spain did so in the Islands.

In the annual accumulated, the archipelago is the only community that increases its tourist spending in the first eight months of the year. It rose 187.7% to 4,564 million euros. In addition, the average expenditure per tourist in August stood at 1,209 euros, above the national average (1,136 euros) and the average daily expenditure amounted to 167 euros per person, the highest of all tourist regions and well above of the national average, located in 135 euros.

The data made public by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) show the competitive advantage that the Balearic Islands have been given to be one of the first destinations to open up to tourism. And it is that in addition to leading tourism spending, it also leads visitor arrivals.

Main destination in Spain

According to INE data, the Balearic Islands were the main destination in Spain chosen by international travelers during the month of August for the fifth consecutive month. The community received in August a total of 1.93 million tourists, both national and international. The number of national tourists arriving during the seventh month of the year was 646,546, a figure much higher than that registered in 2019, before the pandemic (38.6% rise), while that of foreign travelers was 1.3 , which means recovering 57.7% of those who arrived in the same month of 2019.

The archipelago has brought together 25.2% of the total international visits registered in the country as a whole in July and the national market has been the one that has performed the best in August in the Islands, even improving the data for 2019.

The Tourist Reactivation plan promoted at the beginning of the season, says the Government, has worked and has made it possible to position the Balearic Islands in the market. This had the support of employers and unions and with the consensus of the rest of the institutions of the Islands.
