From 17 July, the Perseids, also known as the Tears of St. Lawrence, start to become visible during these summer nights. This “shower of stars” occurs every year during this time. But why can we see the Perseids in Mallorca? The origin of this phenomenon is due to the Swit-Tuttle comet which was discovered in 1863. It is a celestial body with a large diameter of about 26 km. The trail of stellar dust given off by its tail as it approaches the sun means that at this time of the year these remains coincide with the orbit of the earth. The small fragments of the comet enter the Earth’s atmosphere in the form of meteors, leaving a spectacular star shower, better known as the Perseids, during these nights.
To be able to see the Perseids in Mallorca, you have to take into account many factors that will condition a good observation, such as light pollution, weather conditions, such as humidity, clouds and the phases of the moon. From Mallorca Caprice, we bring you some recommendations for observing the Perseids in Mallorca this 2022. Enjoy a magical night.
Best places to see the Perseids in Mallorca in 2022
The most important thing is to get as far away from light pollution as possible. This light pollution is concentrated, above all, in large cities and municipalities such as Palma, Marratixí, Inca, Llucmajor, Manacor, Alcudia and very touristic coastal areas. This is due to the light projected on the streets, which has an impact on the observation of the starry sky at night. Therefore, we will have to avoid these places. We recommend the following locations to be able to see the star shower in Mallorca this 2022:
- Serra de Tramuntana north face: In almost any point of the Serra de Tramuntana that does not face towards urban centres, we can have a good visibility. Above all, we recommend places that are not affected by light pollution on the island. The best places would be the coastal areas facing the sea: Cala Tuent, Sa Calobra and Llucalcari. Also in the reservoirs of Cúber and Es Gorg Blau, it is possible to observe the night sky in an ideal way.
- South Coast: The unspoilt beaches, far away from the population and therefore from light pollution, are a good option to see the Persiedas in Mallorca after a sunset by the sea. Although they are places where you have to walk a long way, we recommend the following beaches in the south of the island, which have the best visibility of the night sky: Es Trenc, Es Carbó, Es Caragol and Cap de Ses Salines. Closer to Palma, we find the cliffs of the Cap Blanc lighthouse.
- Levante Norte: In the Parc Natural de la Península de Llevant, which includes the municipalities of Artá and Capdperera, you can find areas far away from the light of the cities and towns. In fact, the large extension of protected areas in this natural park makes it very pleasant to observe the night sky, especially for astrophotographers and amateur astronomers. If you prefer to observe the star shower in coastal locations, we recommend Cala Torta, Cala Matzoc, Betlem or Son Serra de Marina.
When to see the Perseids in Mallorca
The Tears of San Lorenzo can be enjoyed from the 17th of July until the 24th of August. However, it should be noted that the best night to observe this star shower will be the night of 12th August.
