Corteo, one of Cirque du Soleil’s most enchanting pavilion productions, will finally captivate audiences in Palma de Mallorca, after a forced postponement of two years. The first show will be on August 5 at the Velòdrom Illes Balears, in an exclusive show in Spain.

This unique production, directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, first premiered in Montreal under the Big Tent in April 2005. Since then and transformed into a pavilion show, the show has amazed more than 9 million people in 20 different countries on 4 continents.

Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyful procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to immerse the audience in a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity set in a mysterious space between heaven and earth.

The clown imagines his own funeral which takes place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by silent guardian angels. Juxtaposing the big with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity within each of us. The music becomes lyrical and playful taking Corteo through a timeless celebration where illusion mocks reality.

For the first time at Cirque du Soleil, the stage is in the center of the pavilion and divides the venue, with each half of the audience facing the other half, providing a unique perspective not only of the show, but also of the performer’s view of the spectators. An atmosphere unlike anything ever seen in Cirque du Soleil’s pavilion shows. The set of curtains, inspired by the Eiffel Tower, and the central curtains, which were hand-painted, give a grandiose feel to the stage.

This sets the tone for Corteo’s poetry. Mike Newquist, Senior Vice President of the Touring Entertainment Division, remarked, “We are absolutely thrilled to finally be able to bring Corteo to Europe. For two years, our artists have been looking forward to experiencing the joy of audiences once again in an exciting way with the unique staging of Corteo. For the first time the audience will also be able to see and feel the show from the artist’s perspective. It will be a magical and emotional return.”
