Es Fortí de Cala d’Or.

Cala d’Or is much more than a holiday destination. It is a living testimony of how a vision of the future, artistic sensitivity and love for the land can lead to a different tourism model, rooted in the history and culture of the island. In every corner of Cala d’Or you can feel the imprint of its founders, reminding you that, while it is in Mallorca, its essence will always be that of Eivissa.

The vision for Cala d’Or, a town in the municipality of Santanyí, began with Josep Costa Ferrer, an Eivissan by birth and a visionary by nature. A cartoonist, caricaturist and founder of galleries in Palma, Costa saw in the virgin land of Cala d’Or an opportunity to create something special. In 1933, he began the process of urbanisation with the idea of establishing an artists’ colony, inspired by the architectural style of neighbouring Eivissa. The rules he drew up were respectful of the natural environment and the style of construction was modelled after the Eivissan house.

Thus Cala d’Or was born, a corner that stands out for its uniqueness, which has continued to evolve thanks to people like Tomeu Pons Caldentey, who contributed to turning it into a cosmopolitan and unique place. Pons left his mark on the landscape of this privileged enclave, collaborating in several projects that sought to attract quality tourism, such as the Marina Cala d’Or Yacht Club, the first of its kind in Spain to be built in an uninhabited spot.

Unique identity

Over the decades, Cala d’Or has experienced a remarkable tourist development, becoming a reference point on the map of Mallorca. However, despite its growth, it has maintained its own identity and unique charm. The white houses, the Mediterranean architecture and the feeling of freedom that pervades its streets inevitably evoke the essence of the island of Eivissa.

Today, Cala d’Or is a point of reference on the Mallorcan tourist map and offers visitors an infinite number of leisure activities on land and sea, a vibrant gastronomic scene and a white oasis in which to feel free.
