Foundation and evolution of the Mallorca Fire Service

On 7th May 1984, the Mallorca Fire Service was founded to address the lack of emergency services in the Part Forana of the island. Initially, the service was primarily focused on forest emergencies, but over time it has evolved into a modern and efficient professional team that responds to all types of incidents and emergencies across Mallorca, ensuring the safety of the population.

Infrastructure and service improvements

The Mallorca Fire Brigade Service currently operates eight stations across the island (Alcúdia, Artà, Calvià, Felanitx, Inca, Llucmajor, Manacor, and Sóller), along with a central headquarters and a staff of 293 people, serving all the municipalities of Mallorca, except Palma.

During this term, the Consell de Mallorca has reaffirmed its commitment to improving the fire service by upgrading infrastructure, vehicles, and equipment. Key actions include modernising the fleet with two new vehicles, known as light urban fire engines, which are more efficient and technologically advanced. Additionally, the firefighters’ protective uniforms have been completely updated.

Continuous training

The Island Directorate of Emergencies has focused on continuous training for the firefighters, offering a total of 156 training activities in 2023, surpassing previous records. Nearly 200 members of the brigade have participated in these sessions, accumulating over 900 hours of learning.

Duties and specialisation of the Mallorca Fire Service

The Mallorca Fire Service is responsible for firefighting and prevention, road traffic accident response, mountain rescues, and providing assistance during floods, among other tasks. The service also boasts two specialised units: the Mountain Rescue Group, established in 2000, and the Canine Unit, operational since 2007 and trained for large-area search operations.

Four decades of protecting lives and ensuring the safety of all Mallorcans.” He also highlighted the unwavering commitment of the firefighters to public service.

During the ceremony, hosted by one of the service’s founders, Miquel Rosselló, speeches were given by Toni Ferragut, the first head of the service, and Santiago Rovira, another former leader. A tribute was paid to all the chiefs who have led the service over the years, including Toni Ferragut, Santiago Rovira, Joan Rosselló, David Rotger, Pedro Ladaria, Juan Cifuentes, and Simó Gual (the latter two posthumously).
