Around 300 tractors and agricultural vehicles flooded the streets of central Palma on Monday. Farmers and stockbreeders in Mallorca carried out a massive tractor pull to express their concern for the future of their sector, which is in the midst of a deep crisis. The protest, led by the president of Unió de Pagesos, received the support of numerous citizens who applauded and cheered throughout the march.
The demonstration, called by various primary sector associations, sought to draw attention to the difficulties facing the Mallorcan countryside and demand urgent improvements. More than 300 tractors from various towns in Mallorca gathered at strategic points such as Inca, Campos, Vilafranca de Bonany, Ariany and Santa Maria before heading towards the centre of Palma.
Traffic blockages
The caravan of tractors blocked traffic on the avenues that ring the heart of the Balearic capital, creating a great deal of traffic chaos throughout the city. Guarded by the Guardia Civil, the farmers advanced along secondary roads towards Palma’s Llevant industrial estate, where they concentrated before beginning their march through the main streets of the city.
The march passed without incident, and the farmers arrived at the headquarters of the Government Delegation of the Balearic Islands at around one o’clock in the afternoon. There, the leaders of the organising organisations handed over a manifesto with their demands, bringing the day’s protest to an end.
