After the poor results of the PSOE in the municipal and regional elections of 28M, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has announced the electoral advance in an institutional declaration without questions from the Moncloa Palace

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has announced from the Moncloa Palace that the general elections will be brought forward to 23 July. “I have just had a meeting with His Majesty the King in which I have communicated to the head of state the decision to call a Council of Ministers this afternoon to dissolve the Cortes and proceed to call a general election,” said Sánchez. According to him, the call will be published on Tuesday in the BOE and the elections will be held on Sunday 23 July.

“I have taken this decision in view of the results of the elections held yesterday”, said the President of the Government a day after the municipal and regional elections of 28M. The PP has swept Madrid (City Council and Community), will also govern in the Valencian Community and the city of Seville, and snatches the governments of the Balearic Islands, Extremadura, Aragon and La Rioja from the PSOE.

“The sense of the vote conveys a message that goes further, and that is why as President of the Government and also as Secretary General of the PSOE I take the results personally and believe it is necessary to respond and submit our democratic mandate to the will of the people. I believe that the best thing to do is for Spaniards to make their decision”, said Sánchez.

The last general elections were held in Spain on 10 November 2019. The PSOE was then the winning party in terms of percentage of the vote (28% and 120 seats).
